Braintree, MA (Dec 29, 2009) -- Extending an open invitation to all Catholics to “begin the New Year in prayer and thanksgiving to God for His gifts of life and peace,” Cardinal Seán P. O’Malley will celebrate Mass on New Year’s Eve at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, 1400 Washington Street, Boston, MA.
Mass will be begin at 11:45pm with Cardinal Seán serving as principal celebrant and homilist. A Holy Hour will precede Mass at 10:30pm with a special guest speaker, Sr. Olga Yaqob, a native of Iraq now serving the Catholic Community at Boston University. Sr. Olga will be speaking about Mary as Disciple and Teacher of Peace.
Cardinal Seán said, “Mass will be offered for a deeper respect for the precious gift of human life and for an end to abortion and violence in the world. There is no better way to celebrate New Year’s Eve than in the presence of our Lord, giving thanks to Him for His many gifts. All are welcome to come and welcome the New Year in the beautiful Cathedral of the Holy Cross.”
Rev. Jonathan Gaspar, Co-Director of the Office of Worship and Spiritual Life and the Cardinal’s Priest Secretary, said, “We are pleased to celebrate this annual Mass at the Cathedral. Traditionally, people from all over the Archdiocese, many of whom are seeking a more spiritual and faith filled beginning to the New Year, turn out for this Mass.” He added, “If you’re looking for something to do on New Year’s Eve, come and celebrate First Night at the Cathedral.”
Ample parking will be available free of charge at Jacobson’s Floral Supply, which is only a block away from the Cathedral. Jacobson’s is located at 500 Albany Street, Boston.
