On behalf of Cardinal Seán, we wish to inform you that after five years of service Dr. Mary Grassa O’Neill has decided to conclude her term as Secretary for Education/Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Boston, effective August 15, 2013.
Cardinal O’Malley said, “We are indebted to Dr. O’Neill for her many efforts to help the students we serve fully achieve their potential. Our schools have realized significant improvements in academics while continuing to strengthen their Catholic identity and faith formation. The Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Boston are in a much better place today because of Dr. O’Neill’s dedication and commitment.”
Dr. O’Neill’s work to reform and strengthen Catholic education in the Archdiocese has established a strong foundation for the years ahead. Among her achievements are the reorganization of the Catholic Schools Office and the priority of support for pastors, principals, faculty and staff at the schools. Her contributions have brought great benefit to the more than 41,000 students who are enrolled in Catholic schools in the Archdiocese. She has put us on the path of revitalizing and reinvigorating Catholic education throughout the Archdiocese by developing and implementing the Cardinal’s Strategic Plan for Catholic Education.
Dr. O’Neill said, “Given our schools’ significant achievements, this is an opportune time for a new leader to further advance Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Boston. It was an honor to work with the Catholic Schools Council and Catholic School Office team to serve our wonderful students and families. Among the many blessings of this assignment are our dedicated and talented pastors, principals, heads of school, teachers and benefactors. All ensure that our students get the benefit of a first class Catholic education.”
A process will be implemented for the selection of a new Secretary for Education/Superintendent and further announcements will be made regarding an interim appointment for this position.
Please join the Cardinal in extending our sincere gratitude for Dr. O’Neill’s passionate dedication on behalf of our Catholic schools, as we pray that the Lord will continue to bless her and her family in this time of transition.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Rev. Robert P. Deeley, J.C.D Auxiliary Bishop of Boston Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia
