Major Event for the Jubilee Year in the Archdiocese of Boston A Jubilee Year occurs every 25 years in the Catholic Church. Pope Francis officially opened the Jubilee Year on December 24, 2024, with the opening of the Holy Door of the Papal Basilica of St. Peter followed by the celebration of the Night Mass of the Lord's Birth inside the Basilica. The Jubilee Year calls the faithful to set out on a personal journey of conversion, to reconcile with God, and pilgrimages are a way for the Church to facilitate such opportunities. Ten parishes, in addition to the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, have been announced as pilgrimage sites of the archdiocese. As such, they will host Masses, confession, adoration, and special events. In an early and significant event within the Archdiocese of Boston, every pilgrimage site in the Archdiocese will be hosting 24 Hours for the Lord – a 24-hour period of adoration and extra confession times March 28th to 29th. A Jubilee Year is a time for forgiveness and renewal in our relationship with God. Jubilee years were initially marked in Scripture by the remittance of debt and property, and the healing of relationships. The Holy Father desires that this Jubilee Year will be a "moment of genuine, personal encounter with the Lord Jesus, the ‘door’ (cf. Jn 10:7-9)" (Spes Non Confundit, 1). In his letter announcing the Jubilee Year, Pope Francis wrote, “We must fan the flame of hope that has been given us and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty by looking to the future with an open spirit, a trusting heart and far-sighted vision. The forthcoming Jubilee can contribute greatly to restoring a climate of hope and trust as a prelude to the renewal and rebirth that we so urgently desire; that is why I have chosen as the motto of the Jubilee, Pilgrims of Hope.” Archbishop Richard Henning formally opened the Jubilee Year in the Archdiocese of Boston with an opening Mass celebrated in the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on Dec. 29, the Feast of the Holy Family.
