Watertown, MA - On May 13th, CatholicTV will air the feast day Mass from the International Shrine in Fátima with Cardinal Seán O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, presiding. The motto of the International Anniversary Pilgrimage of May 2011 is “Blessed are you because you believed!” Cardinal Seán says he always had a particular devotion to Our Lady of Fátima.
The Mass will air at noon (Eastern) and 8 PM at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV cable outlets.
The feast day honors the Marian apparitions which took place in Portugal beginning on May 13, 1917. Three children, Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta, were pasturing their flock in the Cova da Iria, parish of Fatima, town of Vila Nova de Ourém, today the diocese of Leiria-Fatima when they saw "a Lady more brilliant than the sun", from whose hands hung a white rosary. Since that time pilgrims have not ceased to come to the Cova da Iria from all parts of the world to share in the Fatima message of peace through prayer.
Once again hundreds of thousands are expected to make a pilgrimage to the shrine to honor the feast of Our Lady of Fatima. In an interview with O Jornal, Cardinal Seán said “It’s very inspiring to see the love and enthusiasm of the pilgrims gathered in Fátima from all over the world; it’s always a great affirmation of one’s own faith to be there for this kind of celebration.” Cardinal Seán concelebrated the Mass in May 2010 at which Pope Benedict XVI presided.
The celebration begins with an International Rosary from the Little Chapel, followed by a liturgical procession and the Mass begins at the main altar of the Church of the Most Holy Trinity. The Bishops Conference of Portugal (CEP) recently announced that there will a national celebration on May 13 at the Shrine of Fatima, in order to mark the beatification of John Paul II, which took place on May 1, in St. Peter’s Square (Rome). Blessed John Paul II, made pilgrimages to Fatima in 1982, 1991 and 2000, as “an example of holiness”.
Fr. Manuel Morujão, CEP’s spokesman, declared that the May 13 pilgrimage is the ideal occasion to celebrate the event: “It is a great motive for the celebration of the beatification of our Pope”.
