May 8, 2020 - Boston's Cathedral Illuminates Towers in Blue in Gratitude to First Responders

BOSTON — The Cathedral of the Holy Cross, as the mother church of New England’s Roman Catholics and historic landmark in Boston’s South End, is proud to be partnered with Washington Gateway Main Street to visibly display our gratitude for the efforts of healthcare professionals and first responders during this pandemic.

Starting Friday, May 8 at 7 p.m., the Washington Street facade of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross facing Washington Street will be illuminated in blue lights. The Cathedral will be joined by homes and buildings throughout Lower Roxbury and the South End displaying similar “Blue Lights of Gratitude” as a tangible way to say “thank you” to our bravest neighbors.

“We hope these blue lights are seen from well beyond the South End—by all Bostonians and Americans who are putting their lives on the line every day for our sake,” said Father Kevin J. O’Leary, rector of the cathedral. “It serves as a reminder to healthcare professionals and first responders that their sacrifices do not go unnoticed and that we are praying for them all daily.”

The Cathedral joins other prominent churches, including the National Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. in the wider, national “Light it Blue” initiative.
