(Braintree, Massachusetts) September 8, 2010... The Archdiocese of Boston today announced that Rev. Thomas Curran is restricted from any public ministry following accusations of sexual abuse of minors dating back to the 1970s and 1980s. Upon receiving these allegations, the Archdiocese immediately notified local authorities.
From 2002 to 2007, Fr. Curran had been on administrative leave following the Archdiocese's receipt of previous allegations of sexual abuse of minors. A canonical process concluded that these complaints against Fr. Curran were unsubstantiated. In 2007, Fr. Curran was assigned the status of permanent disability, with his ministry restricted to sacramental celebrations with members of his family. Pending further proceedings as to the additional allegations, Fr. Curran is restricted from any ministry, including ministry with his family.
"It is with great sadness that we announce these additional allegations of sexual abuse," stated Cardinal O'Malley. "As new information and accusations emerge, we again experience the painful reality of this crisis. While this news is difficult and troubling for us all to receive, it underscores the importance of our ongoing efforts to diligently respond to allegations and strengthens our ardent commitment to safeguard children. I will keep in my prayers all who are involved in and impacted by this matter. I encourage anyone who may be in need of assistance to contact our Office of Pastoral Support and Outreach. Professional counselors are available to offer support and assistance during this difficult time."
