Each November, the faithful of the Archdiocese of Boston have the opportunity to contribute to a special collection for the retired Sisters.
Brief history of this annual collection:
In 1988, the Catholic bishops of the United States launched the Retirement Fund for Religious to address the significant lack of funding for retired Catholic sisters, brothers, and priests in religious orders.
The funding shortage had been compounded by rising healthcare costs and decreased income. Additionally, as more religious reached retirement age and left compensated ministry, income further declined while care needs increased.
Religious institutes are independent organizations, and religious communities are financially responsible for the support and care of their members. The income, earnings, and expenses of any congregation are separate from the parish and diocesan structures of the Archdiocese of Boston.
All donations to the Collection for Retired Religious are distributed directly to the 52 communities that have given service to the Archdiocese of Boston.
