Cardinal Seán O'Malley will celebrate a Mass of Healing during this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy.  He invites in a special way all those who are sick and their caregivers, that they may come and pray for the Lord’s healing in their bodies, minds and souls.  The Cardinal will anoint those who wish to receive the Sacrament of the Sick during this Jubilee Mass.

All are invited to enter through the Cathedral’s Holy Door to receive the plenary indulgence for the Year of Mercy.  This Holy Door is located on the Union Park Street side of the Cathedral, and volunteers will be available for those needing assistance.  Please note: the Holy Door is accessible for those using wheelchairs or stretchers.

Who can receive the Sacrament of the Sick?

Persons who would receive the sacrament include those whose health is seriously impaired by physical or mental illness or old age; those preparing for surgery, if the surgery is caused by serious illness; elderly people who have become notably weakened, even though no serious illness is present; seriously ill children who have sufficient use of reason to be strengthened by the sacrament; and those who have been anointed if they relapse after recovery or if their condition becomes more serious.  Those who would like to be anointed are encouraged to receive the sacrament of reconciliation prior to the Jubilee Mass.

Why is there a special Mass of Healing for the Sick offered during this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy?

Jesus taught us that proclaiming the Gospel to the poor and healing the sick is his first priority as the Good Shepherd.  When he announced the Jubilee year in the fourth chapter of Luke, he described his mission as announcing the good news to the poor, liberating captives and giving sight to the blind.  This provides us, as Jesus’ disciples, a template for our task in the Year of Mercy.  We too are called to be messengers of peace and healing to those who are suffering physically and emotionally.

Who can attend this Jubilee Pilgrimage and Mass for the Sick and their Caregivers?

Anyone who is in need of the Lord’s mercy and healing is welcome to participate in this Jubilee Mass, especially those who are sick and their caregivers.  But we encourage everyone to come and to pray for those you know who are suffering in any way.  Whether it be physical or mental illness, drug or alcohol abuse and addiction of any kind: you are invited to come and to pray together with Cardinal Seán for yourself or for your loved ones who may be suffering in any way.

Organized by the Cardinal’s Office, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, The Order of Malta, Saint John’s Seminary and the Archdiocesan Office of Chaplaincy Programs, the Mass is part of the Jubilee Year of Mercy.
