August 30, 2009 - Archdiocese Places Rev. Frederick Barr on Administrative Leave

(Braintree, Mass.) August 30, 2009…The Archdiocese of Boston today announced that it has placed Rev. Frederick Barr on administrative leave as a result of receiving an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor. The allegation concerns conduct alleged to have taken place approximately twenty years ago. Fr. Barr is pastor of St. Patrick’s Church in Watertown. 

The Archdiocese has notified law enforcement of the allegation and has initiated a preliminary investigation into the complaint.  Fr. Barr will remain on administrative leave pending the outcome of the preliminary investigation. 

The decision to place Fr. Barr on administrative leave represents the Archdiocese’s commitment to the safety of all parties and does not represent a determination of Fr. Barr’s guilt or innocence as it pertains to this allegation.  The Archdiocese will work to resolve this case as expeditiously as possible and in a manner that is fair to all parties. 

Cardinal O’Malley offered his prayers and support for all persons affected by this matter, including the parishioners of St. Patrick’s parish, during this difficult time. Through its Office of Pastoral Support and Outreach, the Archdiocese continues to make counseling and other services available to survivors, their families and parishes impacted by clergy sexual abuse. Further, the Archdiocese has made arrangements for the ongoing pastoral care of this parish community. Cardinal O’Malley expressed his gratitude to Fr. Raymond Kiley upon his acceptance of the assignment of Temporary Administrator of St. Patrick Parish.
