Starting in October, CatholicTV will air a new movie review show starring two self-proclaimed “movie-buffs”- Fr. Chip Hines, and Fr. Bill Kelly. The idea of the show came about when a fellow priest overheard Fr. Chip and Fr. Bill debating about a movie and said, “you two should have your own show”. Not long afterwards, the two priests found themselves in the CatholicTV studios being filmed as they discussed the Superman movie series.
The new show is called “Spotlight”. Fr. Chip Hines works as a Pastor, and Fr. Bill Kelly is the Director of the Office of Clergy Support for the Archdiocese of Boston. Like most priests, the two of them try to be as productive as possible and have even found a way to make their movie-watching a means to get Catholics to think about their faith.
CatholicTV is a nationally-broadcasted television network headquartered near Boston. CatholicTV streams its broadcast simultaneously, 24 hours a day at www.CatholicTV.com
Neither priest has had much experience with television, and “filming has been a lot of fun.” said Fr. Kelly. “It took a while getting used to looking at the right cameras and timing things right.”
The new show features footage from films such as Superman and Lord of the Rings. Fr. Chip and Fr. Bill dug into the underlying themes of the films such as the Christ-like self –sacrifice of Superman in the film Superman Returns and the humility and temptation of Frodo in Lord of the Rings.
Despite the fact that both men are Catholics, they often disagree about films with Fr. Chip saying “it was a great film” while Fr. Kelly saying, “it was terrible” and vice versa.
“I think the show’s going to be great. We hope that we will be able to help people come closer to Christ.” said Fr. Chip in an interview with CatholicTV. “Fr. Kelly and I have very good chemistry, and want to help people grow in their faith by looking at universal themes in films such as good and evil.
The new show will start in October and will be viewable in full-screen and free of charge at CatholicTV.com and on CatholicTV where available. Air times are yet to be determined.
