On February 7th, also known as Super Bowl Sunday, CatholicTV will air “Faith Bowl III”. Faith Bowl is a round-table discussion by sports celebrities about the challenges of living the Catholic faith amidst the glitz and glamour of professional sports. The 2010 Faith Bowl features professional athletes Mike Piazza, Mike Sweeney, and the Minnesota Twins’ Bobby Keppel.
Faith Bowl will air on CatholicTV and CatholicTV.com at 5:30PM Eastern and again at 10:30PM on Super Bowl Sunday.
This is the third year that Family Theater is producing Faith Bowl in collaboration with the organization Catholic Athletes for Christ. This year's program features:
- Mike Piazza, a retired catcher after a 16-year career in Major League Baseball, mostly with the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a 12-time All-Star and the 1993 National League "Rookie of the Year."
- Mike Sweeney, a designated hitter for the Seattle Mariners in 2009, a 15-year MLB veteran and five-time selection to the All-Star team as a Kansas City Royal.
- Bobby Keppel, a relief pitcher for the Minnesota Twins. He appeared in 37 games in 2009 and was the winning pitcher of the Twins' playoff game with the Detroit Tigers for the American League Central Division title. He is the Faith Bowl III moderator.
Among the issues they discuss are the importance of family life and the important role of a father in being a “true man.” Some quotes from the program include:
Piazza says, “That's where we have to redirect our energy, to teach our young men, this is what a real man is, being a faithful husband, present father and as well as a provider. … Don’t live the life others want you to live. Live the life God wants you to live.”
Keppel says, “Being a man in this culture is tough because they tell you it’s about what you have rather than who you are. My goal is to fulfill that challenge in Scripture: love your wife like God loves the Church. The covenant we made in the sacrament of marriage is like a big oak tree and our children are the branches. My family and my relationship with Christ is everything.”
About Catholic Athletes for Christ: Founded by Ray McKenna Catholic Athletes for Christ (CAC) serves Catholic athletes in the practice of their faith and shares the Gospel in and through sports. We work with athletes at all levels of sport in an effort to promote a Catholic sports culture. CAC was formed in response to Pope John Paul II's call to evangelize the world of sports and his establishment of the Vatican's Office of Sports. As St. Paul's epistles teach us, Christ is God’s true athlete and we are made perfect when, and only when, we imitate Him. John Paul II advises us that, "Every Christian is called to become a strong athlete of Christ, that is a faithful and courageous witness to His Gospel." We invite you to join us as an "athlete for Christ." www.catholicathletesforchrist.com/
