Sr. Helen is the author of the book, DEAD MAN WALKING: AN EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT OF THE DEATH PENALTY IN THE UNITED STATES. The book was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1993
and made the 1994 American Library Associates Notable Book List. In 1996, the book was developed into a major motion picture starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn.
Sr. Helen has been the subject of numerous media stories, magazine articles and television broadcasts, and she is the recipient of numerous honors and awards. Sr. Helen lectures around the country, and continues in her prison ministry in Louisiana. She is the founder of SURVIVE, an organization which provides counseling and support for grieving families of murder victims. More information can be found at her website: www.prejean.org.
The annual Gallagher Lecture is named for the late Rev. Henry Gallagher, who died in 1991, and was especially noted for his love and service of the poor and concern for the young and their education. The lecture is free and open to the public.
