Star of the Sea Parish was suppressed in 2004 and the Church was relegated to profane use in July 2011. This means that Star of the Sea is no longer considered a sacred worship site. Following an appeal of this decision, former parishioners appealed to the Apostolic Signatura, the highest court of appeal in the Catholic Church. The Signatura has issued a decree rejecting an appeal and the property can now be marketed for potential sale. We have been in contact with the City of Quincy and have made no decisions have been made regarding the future use of the church property. The Archdiocese has also been in communication with representatives of the appeal. Now that the process has been concluded it is important to continue to focus our efforts and energies on the building of a strong parish and faith community at Sacred Heart, respecting the former parishioners of Star of the Sea. Many have joined our parish and all are welcome.
