Apostolic Nuncio To The United States To Be Honored In The Archdiocese

Redemptoris Mater Archdiocesan Missionary Seminary's Fourth Annual Gala Dinner June 16^th

Braintree, MA –  On June 16, 2013, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States will be the guest of honor at the Gala Dinner of the Redemptoris Mater Archdiocesan Missionary Seminary. The event will be held at Four Points by Sheraton in Norwood, and will start with a social hour at 5PM, followed by the dinner at 6PM. This is the seminary's main yearly fundraising event.

“We look forward to welcoming Archbishop Viganò to Boston,” said Cardinal Seán.  “As the Holy Father’s personal representative to the United States he brings the blessings and well wishes of Pope Francis to the Archdiocese.  We are certain that Archbishop Viganò’s visit as our honored guest will be a moment of joyful celebration for the gift of his vocation and ministry, as well as a celebration of the election of our new Holy Father, Pope Francis.  We pray for all of our seminarians and those discerning a call to the priesthood and religious life, that they might be inspired by good priests, like Archbishop Vigano.”

Archbishop Viganò said, “Indeed I am honored by the invitation of His Eminence Seán Patrick Cardinal O’Malley, OFM Cap, to be the keynote speaker at this year’s Redemptoris Mater Archdiocesan Missionary Seminary Gala Dinner on Sunday, June 16^th.  In addition, this joyful occasion will be a wonderful opportunity for me to meet some of the Catholic faithful of the Archdiocese of Boston as we pray together for an increase in priestly vocations within the Archdiocese and the Church Universal.  Throughout this Year of Faith, I also ask your prayers for our recently elected Holy Father, Pope Francis, for your Archbishop, Cardinal O’Malley, together with his Auxiliary Bishops, and for all those who serve the Church in leadership positions throughout the world.”

Rev. Antonio F. Medeiros, Rector of the Redemptoris Mater Archdiocesan Missionary Seminary, said, “In the year when the Holy Spirit gave us Pope Francis, we are deeply honored that our Holy Father’s representative in the United States will come to Boston to be honored at our seminary’s gala dinner.  This will be a moment of grace for all of us, for our seminary, for the Archdiocese of Boston, and certainly for all those who will be able to attend the dinner.  We will honor Archbishop Viganò for a lifetime of faithful service to the Church, for an uncompromising love of the truth, and for courage in the exercise of his priestly ministry.  Cardinal Seán often says that “vocations are everybody’s business.” June 16^th is Father’s Day and I cannot think of a better way to honor my father, and certainly Our Father, than that we come together to celebrate the gift of the priesthood and the need for good and holy priests in the Church today.”

Cardinal Seán officially opened the Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Boston in 2005.  Since then, two priests formed at the Redemptoris Mater have been ordained for the Archdiocese of Boston.  Redemptoris Mater seminarians are ordained for the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Boston and are assigned by Cardinal O’Malley to serve the needs of the Church in Boston, as well as the needs of the Church throughout the world as missionaries.  Like every priest in the Archdiocese, they serve wherever the Cardinal sends them, and they do so with generous and loving hearts.  

Currently in the United States there are Redemptoris Mater Seminaries in Boston, Dallas, Denver, Miami, Newark, Washington D.C. and Agana (Guam).  In 2013, there were 21 seminarians enrolled in the Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Boston from 11 different countries.  Redemptoris Mater Seminaries seek to prepare priests for the New Evangelization.  The first Redemptoris Mater Seminary was opened in the Diocese of Rome in 1987.  Today there are 87 Redemptoris Mater Seminaries in the world, on five continents.   To date, more than 2,000 men formed in these seminaries have already been ordained to the priesthood.
