Boston, MA – The Massachusetts Catholic Conference (MCC) Board of Governors has announced the appointment of a search committee for the selection of a new Executive Director.
The search committee will be chaired by Bishop George W. Coleman, Diocese of Fall River. Each of the Bishops has appointed a member of the search committee to represent his diocese. The members are:
James Brett, President & CEO of The New England Council
Rev. Michael K. McManus, Chancellor, Diocese of Fall River
Sr. Annette McDermott, SSJ, Diocese of Springfield
Msgr. Thomas Sullivan, Chancellor, Diocese of Worcester
Very Rev. Bryan K. Parrish, Archdiocese of Boston, will provide staff support to Bishop Coleman and the search committee.
Bishop Coleman said, “I look forward to working with such a respected group to advise the bishops in selecting the next Executive Director for MCC. Our goal is to undertake a thorough and extensive search to identify the most qualified person available to continue advocating on behalf of the Church in public policy matters. There are many important issues facing communities and our Church. We look forward to recommending for appointment an articulate, faithful and experienced professional in the very near future.”
The position became available when Edward F. Saunders, Esq., passed away on August 28, 2010. Gerald D. D’Avolio, Esq. has been appointed Interim Executive Director of MCC until a successor to Mr. Saunders is named. Mr. D’Avolio previously served as Executive Director of MCC from 1976 until his retirement in 2004.
Since 1969, the MCC has served as the public policy arm of the four Catholic dioceses in the Commonwealth. The MCC speaks not only to specific legislative proposals and administrative procedures, but also to the major human and social moral issues of the day.

This position advises the four Roman Catholic Bishops of Massachusetts on issues of public policy and acts as the legislative agent for the Archdiocese of Boston and the Dioceses of Fall River, Springfield and Worcester. Must be a faithful and committed Roman Catholic, in good standing with the Church. Requires a Bachelor’s Degree, while a Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) or graduate degree in public policy is preferred. Experience as a lobbyist, or equivalent legislative, executive, administrative or public policy experience is required. Requires knowledge of Catholic social teaching, and the ability to develop rapport with legislators, lobbyists, and other organizations, including ecumenical and interfaith organizations.
