On November 20, 2010, Bishop Robert Hennessey, Auxiliary Bishop of Boston will present the Bishop James Augustine Healy award to Mr. Alvin Shiggs, a parishioner at St. Mary of the Angels church in the Egleston Square section of Roxbury. Because of his faith in God and commitment to the Church, Mr. Shiggs has been instrumental in starting various ministries within the parish, such as outreach to youth and young adults, a food pantry and participation in neighborhood, and walks in order to foster a stronger sense of community. The Bishop James Augustine Healy Award is given in honor of the legacy of the first recognized black bishop in the United States. This award is presented to an individual who has exemplified strong, effective leadership and service within the Black Catholic community. Recipients of the Bishop Healy Award include Rev. Russell Best, Mr. Robert Gittens, Esq., and Dr. Sylvia Quarrle Simmons.
Bishop James Augustine Healy was the first African American Roman Catholic Bishop in the United States, the second Bishop of Portland, Maine, and a priest of the then, Boston Diocese.
