According to the Catechism, "Pilgrimages evoke our earthly journey toward heaven and are traditionally very special occasions for renewal in prayer. For pilgrims seeking living water, shrines are special places for living the forms of Christian prayer "in Church.'" (CCC 2691)
The Jubilee calls us to set out on a personal journey of conversion, to reconcile with God, and pilgrimages are a beautiful tool in the Church to facilitate just that. When we travel, we not only change location, but we ourselves change.
Pilgrimages have pastoral value and offer opportunities for conversion and spiritual growth. The Book of Blessings offers blessings for pilgrims on their departure and their return to remind them of the purpose of pilgrimages, the Christian model they are to be while on it, and a reminder to live out the conversion they experienced. Please see Chapter 8 (595-616) for these particular blessings. Pilgrimages for the Jubilee are being offered within the Archdiocese of Boston, and there are also opportunities to make a pilgrimage to Rome.
